The quote is written, and it is free. It lists the square footage of the attic, the depth and type of insulation that is coming out, and whether it has droppings, water or smoke in it. If re-insulation is part of the job, the target R-value and the new depth are on the same page, priced separately.
That lets you hold our quote next to another one and compare them line by line. A lower number often means a thinner job or a missing step. The quote also says where the old insulation goes once it leaves your driveway, and anything that needs special handling is listed on its own line.
We photograph the attic before we start and again after the last bag leaves. You see the old insulation, anything we found in it, and the bare joists at the end. If we find entry holes, leaks or a bathroom fan venting into the attic, those get photographed too.
The photos are yours to keep. They help with insurance claims, with a home sale and with any work that follows.
The vacuum machine and the collection bags stay in the driveway. Only the hose comes into the house, and it runs straight to the attic hatch. The floor under the hatch is covered, the opening is sealed around the hose, and the path is kept clear. The exhaust from the machine is outside, so the dust stays out of the rooms you live in.
At the end of the day we vacuum the hatch area, lift the covers and check the hallway. If anything was bumped or marked while we worked, we tell you before we leave.
Vermiculite stays untouched until a lab has tested it, and we will never call a patch of it harmless because of how it looks. When we come across it, the job pauses, a sample is sent off to a proper lab, and a trained asbestos abatement contractor is called only if the result requires one.
We will not blow new insulation over droppings. The attic gets cleaned and sanitized first, every time.
We will not quote removal when a top-up will do. If the old insulation is clean and dry, we will say so.
We will also tell you not to sweep or vacuum droppings yourself. The local public health unit gives the same advice.

Vermiculite insulation removal is handled differently from every other attic job, because the material may contain asbestos. Once we spot it, work stops, a sample goes off for testing, and a trained asbestos abatement contractor is brought in only if the lab says so. No hose goes near it before then.
